Retailers urged to follow online route to survival

Struggling retailers must sharpen their online sales strategies if they are to beat the credit crunch.

Leading retail and e-commerce expert Tony Stockil will tell an invited audience of senior executives at the bigmouthmedia Retail Summit that with customers increasingly moving online in search of better deals, they must either respond or risk losing ground. According to the Javelin Group CEO, consolidating those channels delivering the best ROI and identifying critical new initiatives should be the focus for 2009/10.

“Although the High Street is clearly suffering the consequences of the economic downturn, there still advantages to be gained by flexible, forward-thinking retailers. Consumers are turning to the web in ever increasing numbers, both the research and to buy, and this rapid emergence of multi-channel shopping is creating a whole new set of opportunities,” said Stockil.

“Capitalising upon these opportunities will be key to gaining competitive advantage over the next few years.”

Stockil will be joined by a panel of industry-leading online retail experts recruited to speak on a range of themes examining how the economy is affecting ecommerce growth, the changing behaviours of different customer segments and the retail strategies recommended to help businesses prosper in the current environment.

Taking the podium will be Peter Fitzgerald, Industry Leader Retail at Google UK, Microsoft Lead Search Analyst Ravleen Sahni and Yahoo! Retail Category Director Nicola Ibberson. Facebook UK Sales Manager Josh Smith, Bebo’s Simon Podd, e-Conversions MD Duncan Jennings and Hitwise UK Research Director Robin Goad are also scheduled to make presentations.

“Coming to terms with the age of multichannel retailing is one of the greatest challenges facing the sector today,” said Finlay Clark, Senior Retail Strategist at bigmouthmedia.

“We designed this summit to answer some of the bigger questions, and the attendees can look forward to an exciting event focused on successful strategies, informal networking and a chance to speak directly with the people at the forefront of online retailing in the UK today.”

Note: The bigmouthmedia Retail Summit takes place in London on 15th April and is a free event aimed at senior marketing and ecommerce executives. Places are limited, but those wishing to attend can call 0845 130 0055 or email hello@bigmouthmedia. com for an invitation.
